Auto Insurance – 10 Myths Busted!

As a consumer, you may know that about having auto insurance. You may feel that you have all the information you need to make insurance-related decisions. However, there are different myths about auto insurance.

‘No-fault insurance means I do not need to worry’

Each state has different guidelines for no fault insurance coverage. On average, your auto insurance must cover the medical expenses and inconvenience of loss wages. It does not matter who caused the accident. For example, even if you caused a vehicle accident, your auto insurance company determines the party responsible.

‘My vehicle’s car color determines my insurance premiums’

auto insurance myths

Red cars are NOT more expensive to insure

Numerous factors help determine how insurance premiums are calculated. Some factors involve vehicle safety features, overall vehicle repair costs, and the past driver history. A car’s color does not effect insurance premiums.

‘My cousin borrowed my car, so she must pay for the damage’

Authorizing another person to drive your vehicle represents a responsibility. When a automobile crash occurs, you are held responsible for the damage. Your auto insurance must make damage-related payments not your cousin’s. If your coverage is not adequate, your cousin’s policy may help with payments.

‘My auto insurance company can refuse coverage at a moment’s notice’

As an auto insurance policy holder, your state regulations does not allow companies to cancel coverage during a policy term. According to Petrarca, the company can cancel coverage based on specific reasons, such as nonpayment.

‘My vehicle costs more because it is expensive’

An auto insurance firm pays attention to the “loss history” for car types. Loss history identifies the amount of claims paid out for a particular vehicle mode. It also calculates the vehicle’s repair-related costs. Thus, your original vehicle sale price does not factor into premiums.

‘My auto insurance will skyrocket because I received a ticket’

A vehicle-related ticket does not always warrant an increase. Your insurer considers your driving history and the nature of the ticket.

‘I can save money not getting comprehensive auto insurance because no one steals old vehicles’

Older car safety against theft is a common myth. Criminals may desire an older car more than a newer car. Older, popular cars have parts that may be hard to replace. The criminals can sell car parts for premium amounts.

‘My auto insurance coverage will any personal property stolen from my vehicle.’

Some people keep expensive personal property in their vehicles and think they have coverage. Auto insurance coverage does not protect your personal property, such as cell phones. You may be able to file a claim under a home insurance policy. A deductible can apply.

‘I purchased a new car after a recent auto insurance premium payment. I do not need a new policy’

It does not matter that you purchased a new car after a payment under the old vehicle. You must contact your insurer and have a new policy processed.

‘I can use the same auto insurance policy to cover personal or business uses’

Personal auto insurance and business auto insurance are not the same. If you use your vehicle for business-related purposes, you must contact your insurer for business coverage.

Steps To Take When Filing an Auto Insurance Claim

Traffic or vehicular accidents can be avoided but the possibility of encountering one cannot be totally eliminated. There will be times when claims for auto insurance need to be made. These claims may be for simple reasons such as minor scratches on vehicles but they may also entail more serious problems such as vehicles being totaled or fatalities. Believe it or not, some people don’t file a claim thinking that may ruin their chances of finding cheap car insurance in the future.

Keeping and securing copies of your auto insurance documents are very important things to do upon obtaining them. They should be placed in some location that is safe but easily accessible. On the other hand, while driving, it is recommended to always carry a pen, notepad, and a camera to be able to adequately document accidents as they happen. Mobile phones with cameras are good enough in taking on the spot photos of accidents.

In case an accident happens, the first thing to do is to check and ascertain the safety or health of the people involved. The next step is to promptly phone police officers and to report the incident. The police officers should be properly informed about the location of the accident, the gravity of the damages, and the conditions of the drivers and passengers. Informing the police is important to make sure that a person in authority will be promptly available to assess the situation and to intervene in case heated disputes happen.

Some of the important details to consider and take not of are the cars involved, witnesses, and the extent of damages. Taking photos or videos is also highly advisable to come up with irrefutable evidences to support insurance claims as well as to provide convincing answers to the police officers in the determination of fault.

After taking all the necessary evidences of the accident and sufficient documentation, the next step is to promptly call the insurance company. It is recommended calling the insurance company while you are still at the location of the accident (if making a call can be possible). The insurance company asks standard questions and sends the claim forms after the report has been made. The forms should then be properly filled up. The required supporting documents, furthermore, need to be complied properly and attached to the claim forms as instructed.

For not so serious incidents that warrant an insurance claim, it is still important to follow the general insurance claim steps prescribed. The gathering of evidences or supporting documents, the call to the insurance company, and the claim procedure should be promptly initiated.
